Did you Know... Posted on: 13 September 2011 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a result of the recent survey, we'd like to clarify some points about the ANAWBS show.
Judges Judges are volunteers. They are not paid by ANAWBS. However we do offer reimbursement of transport costs eg taxi fares home after judging. Wine judges come mostly from industry. Some are ‘at work’ while they are judging, others take a day off to help out. Beer judges come partly from industry, others are amateurs with judging skills and experience. At least half have completed the BJCP or other industry relevant program. Both beer and wine judging are based on set criteria, and allocate a point score to each entry. This means each entry is judged on its merits within its class or style. For more details check out competition details, medals and judging criteria on the website.
Country wines Country wines (or fruit wines, as they are also known), are popular with new winemakers, in areas of Australia that do not grow grapes, and can be made at any time of the year, ie are not restricted to vintage time. ANAWBS does not have a specific class restricted to fruit/country wines. However the following classes are suitable for, and include, non grape wines: W22 Sparkling grape and or non grape wine. White or red wine, any vintage W23 Cider dry, sweet or sparkling W24 Grape or non grape fortified or dessert style wines. Mead
- ANAWBS is held in the University mid semester break in September/October each year. The reason for this is that our major sponsor, the University of Adelaide, makes the facilities at the Waite campus available to us free of charge at this time. The exact dates will vary depending on the University calendar. Unfortunately we have no control over this, nor over the dates of the Footy grand final or other events such as SABSOSA, the State
Amateur Brewers Show of SA. This year our presentation day is NOT on the long weekend.
- ANAWBS Beer and Wine classes are reviewed each year after the Show, and adjusted if there is a need eg a trend towards fewer or more entries in a particular class. The entire Show is financially and organisationally accountable, and the organising committee reports to the sponsoring clubs, the Amateur Winemakers and Brewers Club of Adelaide and the Blackwood Winemakers & Brewers Club.
Survey Results Posted on: 24 August 2011 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to everyone who entered the 2011 ANAWBS survey. Your feedback was greatly appreciated, and will be taken into account to help improve the Show. Some interesting statistics: 57% of answers came from SA. The majority of entrants (56%) were NOT members of a winemaking or brewing club. 33% of entrants had first heard about ANAWBS through a brewshop or winemaking supplies outlet, another 33 % through a club and 20% from a friend. 95% had entered the Show previously and 80% were planning on entering again this year: beer and/or wine and or labels. Most also enter other local/regional/national competitions. 79% had purchased from Show sponsors at least once in the last year. Most entrants were happy with the way the Show is being run. However there were a number of comments and suggestions noted about timing of the show, judging, publicity and logistics.
Watch this space for further details.
